MEET THE ARTIST. Petworth based artist, writer, and architect Adam Chamy creates expressionist mixed-media works that transform absence, memory, and cultural fragments into mythic, contemporary images. Across portraits, landscapes, immersive environments, and written narratives, he reworks found materials, mundane references, and temporal symbols into layered, palimpsest-like visions that hover between waking and dream. Drawing inspiration from magical realism, ancestral memory, and mystic archetypes—the truth-teller, the prophet, the outlaw— Chamy’s work blends the sacred and the everyday, the theatrical and the intimate. His visual language ranges from spare, meditative watercolors and atmospheric landscapes to dense, maximalist portraits and collages. Chamy’s broader practice directly engages political, cultural, and historical narratives, particularly those shaped by displacement, heritage, and public memory. Chamy’s work has been exhibited at the United Nations East Gallery, Museo del Brigantaggio in Italy, and the al-Quds Gallery, and has toured nationally with UNRWA USA and photojournalist Motaz Azaiza. In fall 2026, he will have two works included in a forthcoming 2026 Invitational Exhibition at the The Phillips Collection. His solo exhibition, “Of Refuge, Of Home,” which explored narratives drawn from his Palestinian-Texan background, was featured by WAMU and The Washington Post’s Express.

WHAT WAS THAT I SAW?
WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
WAS IT A DREAM?
There are hours that live in between daytime and nighttime. The body is restful but the mind moves. Time looses its sequence and rhythm and unmoored from it’s purpose contorts and twists. Twilight and other stories is an ongoing series of work from those hours. What emerges when sleep will not come is a particular kind of seeing. Seasons grow acute. Sounds sharpen. The position of stars, the quality of July light, the way a cicada sounds in the dark — these become legible in ways they never are by day. Memory surfaces without being summoned. The eye, with nowhere else to go, goes deeper into what is in front of it. Working across mixed media painting, written diary entries, and a site specific installation, Chamy records what attention produces when it has no choice but to remain awake. The works carry the perceptual signature of sleepless states — exhaustion and vigilance arriving together, the boundary between observation and imagination quietly dissolving. Twilight and Other Stories asks what becomes visible when we cannot stop looking, and what forms of clarity, strangeness, or tenderness might arise there.
